Leafy Pumpkins

Step 1: Using a large leaf (or a leaf pattern enlarged to fit your pumpkin), transfer design onto the center of an intact pumpkin.
Step 2: With a pencil draw a complementary shape to frame the leaf design, preferably leaving at least 1/2 inch of space on all sides of leaf edges.
Step 3: Use a scraping tool to peel away flesh between leaf shape and its frame. With the same tool, carve leaf veins in a freehand pattern.
Step 4: Arrange multiple silhouetted pumpkins along the center of an outdoor table. Add stones or leaves to complete the setting.

Globe lanterns

Invert a glass globe that normally goes over an electric ceiling light fixture, tuck a tea light inside, and you've got a holiday lantern. Choose a globe that fits over the porch light and you can greet trick-or-treaters in an orange glow.

Nail It

This fall we decided our Halloween would take a decidedly adult spin as we swapped out bright orange jack-o'-lanterns for the sophisticated—but still ghostly—soft hues of ivory and gray pumpkins studded with gleaming silver and broze nailheads.

Pumpkin bouquet

Welcome trick-or-treaters with a cheerful grouping of harvest- season pumpkin flowers. These daisies, roses, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums are just as easy to carve as a ghoulish face. The tricky part: Instead of cutting all the way through to the core, peel away the tough outer layer and allow the pith underneath to remain. The contrasting shades of orange will stand out during the day and glow golden at night.

Tangerine Orange

Without a doubt, the showstopper for this living room is the vibrant wall color. Because of this, there's little need to go overboard with accessories. So the designer kept all the other elements--pillows, slipcovers, lamps, flooring, and accessories--simple and uncluttered. Accent colors, such as other citrus hues and rich natural browns, were drawn from the painting.

Brick Floors

Easy to clean and maintain, brick pavers replaced cream-colored carpeting in this family room. The most popular designs for brick floors are running bond, herringbone, and basket weave.

Framing the Frame

Colorful artwork hung on a long wall receives extra attention when it's trimmed with simple molding.

Mustard-yellow walls provide a cheerful background for folding and hanging clean clothes.

In this kitchen, the tone is set by granite counters and sleek stainless steel appliances. The custom-designed cabinets--stained dark cherry to match the red hues in the granite--include pullout corner and pantry systems. The island has a chopping-block table that can be wheeled out and used as a cart.

A cluster of low teak sofas and cement-topped tables on the deck forms a central outdoor lounge. Built of Mangaris (a dark, eco-friendly hardwood also known as red balau).

Living Large in a Small Garden

A “floating” bench and a fire bowl, created from a colored concrete planter, make up the new living space. Blue bamboo helps screen the dining area and guest-house.

From its vaulted ceilings to its tile floors and terra-cotta walls, this bathroom was made for pampering. The elevated tub is surrounded by marble and is accessible from three sides. The tiled, ultra-roomy shower boasts dual faucets, multiple shower heads, and high-set windows that filter in natural light.

Soaking in Serenity

To make the tub deep enough for immersion, yet low enough to take advantage of the garden views, the designer made the tub 6 inches higher than the floor of the adjoining shower. Large picture windows offer cinematic views of the garden, a peaceful, private landscape.

Pastel Palette

The kitchen's color palette is like a muted Monet painting. A symphony of cool pastels -- robin's egg–blue walls, smoky lilac cabinets -- infuses the home with fresh colors.
